"The Betty Draper"
Acrylic, Glitter, Custom Frame
June 2021
"The Betty Draper" is inspired by the formal, fancy, women's style of the past. In my mind's eye I was channeling the glamour, and color pallets of Jackie O, Grace Kelly, and Chanel Suits... My creative instinct finally settling on a fictional TV character, Betty Draper, from Mad Men, an absolute Beauty, Fabulous AF, whose wardrobe still influences my inspiration, a somewhat tragic character, but this painting was channeling her Iconic attitude, glamour, and style.
It's completely glitter.
After I sketched the vase and flowers and dots, onto the canvas, I executed it very carefully.
Technical detail in my body of work is often one of my greatest strengths.
I worked one inch by one inch square at a time, first brushing down acrylic mixed with adhesive medium into the sketched detail, then I sprinkled the corresponding color glitter, adhering it to the paint and sticky medium. Just like in grade school I then had to lift up the canvas and empty the leftover glitter off the canvas to my catch all below, and this is how I worked this entire piece.
It was the first time I have ever created a painting made entirely of glitter and I have to say, I am NOT disappointed.
My finishing touch, the handmade frame, I commissioned from an Artisan in California, the perfect chic adornment for "Betty's" fabulousness.
